Crime certainly seems to be one of the top concerns among many countries and Canada is no exception. While statistics clearly show that some crime rates are down, violent crime is a priority. The Calgary Police Service recently released some disturbing stats (based on a five year comparison, 2004 – 2008) indicating that attempted murders, home invasions and kidnappings/abductions are all on the rise.  Gang violence is also on everyone’s radar as British Columbia attempts to address their problem.  It’s taking it toll and Canadians across the country are concerned!

Police agencies such as the RCMP, Calgary and Edmonton Police Services are utilizing a wide-range of resources and collaborating with the communities they serve to address the problems. Governments are also getting tougher on crime but the tragedies continue. Creative solutions can sometimes yield some impressive results!  Case in point, a school project in Toronto.  CTVs W5 recently aired their feature titled “Beacon of Hope“, an inspiring story indeed.

There is certainly no shortage of resources on most crime-related issues. Provinces are doing their best to educate professionals and the general public.  As citizens and business owners we can each play a very important role in community crime prevention.  In fact, the steps we take can have a dramatic impact on crime reduction.  Alberta Crime Prevention Week, this May 10th – 16th is a primary example of just how dedicated our province is and it helps Albertans get more involved in making their communities safer.
